Veterans in Paradise started with a simple concept, Vets Living in the Dominican Republic supporting other Vets. First in the forging of a collaborative community of Veterans living here, sharing resources, information and having get togethers. Secondly, in helping out interested Veterans in the United States to relocate to this island paradise.
The creator of Veterans in Paradise, twenty year combat Veteran Keith Pyron noticed when he moved here that the Veteran community here was fragmented. Nobody was sharing information, helping each other and creating community. We don’t have an American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars post here like they do in Costa Rica, Mexico, Thailand and other places abroad.
Veterans are communal people, we share common experiences even across branches and generations. We feel a sense of belonging when we are surround ourselves with people who share our values, can relate to our pasts and understand sacrifice.

One reason Veterans are flocking to the Dominican Republic is that concepts like God, family and community are important in people’s day to day lives here. The rising individualism in America, political division and the ever increasing cost of living is making life abroad more and more appealing. The Dominican Republic stands apart as one of the best countries for American Veterans and Veterans in Paradise is giving Veterans a real community here.
“I can say I feel more at home in the Dominican Republic than I do in my hometown. It sounds odd to say that, but it’s true. I feel like an alien there and comfortable here in Puerto Plata.”
- Navy Veteran Mike
5 Questions With Vets In Paradise Founder Keith Pyron aka SGT Sosua
Why did you make your home in Sosua?
I love Sosua for the walkable living conditions. The peaceful beach lifestyle and views never get old.
Why do you think this organization is needed?
Veterans operate at their best when they’re surrounded by people that understand them. Brotherhood is such an important component of our military profession and I wanted to create that environment right here.
What’s your advice for Veterans thinking about moving here?
Like any military operation, the planning phase is key. Just like when you served, you want to be “in the know.” Do all your homework, visit for thirty days then make an informed decision.

What’s been the biggest challenge about creating a Veteran organization from scratch in another country?
Honestly, dealing with some of the politics. A lot of Veterans want to stay away from the cliques and groups and can be hesitant of anything new. It’s not the VFW, there’s no agenda other than fellowship in a paradise environment.
What challenge should Vets expect when moving to Sosua?
A lot of Veterans feel guilty serving themselves, finally looking out for themselves and putting themselves number one. Most of us have served the country, our family and never ourselves. You’re taking the time to fix yourself while living in a totally new environment, in a different country.
